Tan Sri Syed Agil bin Syed Hassan was born on 4th June 1923 in Alor Star, Kedah. He received his early education at the Al-Mashoor Islamic School, Penang and later at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Star. In 1958, he furthered his studies at the Middle Temple, London and return to the country with a law degree.

In appreciation of his services and contributions, he was bestowed with several awards, which among them, include the Panglima Setia Mahkota (P.S.M.) which carries the title Tan Sri and the Dato' Paduka Mahkota Kedah (D.P.M.K.).
