Dato' Syeikh Hasbullah bin Haji Abd.Halim was born on 25 July 1941 in Langkawi, Kedah. He started his schooling at a Malay school until standard five. In 1959, he continued his studies at the Mahmud College until 1963.

After completing his studies at the Mahmud College, Dato' Syeikh Hasbullah left for Egypt in 1963 and continued his studies at the Al- Azhar University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, specializing in Syariah. In 1986, Dato' Syeikh Hasbullah resumed his studies at the Malaysian International Islamic University and graduated with a Diploma in Judiciary and Syariah Administration.

In appreciation of his services and contributions, Dato' Syeikh Hasbullah was bestowed several awards which include the Bintang Cemerlang Kedah (B.C.K) in 1985, the Setia Diraja Kedah (S.D.K) in 1992 and the Dato' Setia Diraja Kedah (D.S.D.K) which carries the title Dato' in 1996.
