Omar Rojik, whose real name is Omar bin Ali, a Kedahan, was born
on 23rd of November, 1925 in Semerang Perak, Alor Setar, and received
his early education at the Malay and English schools until standard
three.
During his school days, he could play a number of musical instruments,
could recite poems by memorizing them and was keen in reading Indonesian
novels. Upon completion of his schooling, he started working in
the PWD (Public Works Department or Jabatan Kerja Raya) workshop.
He joined the activities of the youth movement and was involved
in the repair of aircraft during the Japanese Occupation. Apart
from that, he was involved in politics and joined the party headed
by Ahmad Boestamam. In search of permanent employment, he migrated
to Singapore. There, he met R. Azmi who got him a job as a labourer
at the Malay Film Productions (MFP) Company. It was from here that
he came to know the local film world. He was one of the few Malays
who were given the opportunity to direct films produced by the MFP.
His involvement in the acting world started when he was offered
small parts and gradually chosen to play the more important and
prominent roles.
