He was born on 3 November, 1934 in Dulang Besar, Yan, Kedah. His
education began in 1940 at the Derga Malay School, proceeding on
to the Kanchut Malay School and later to St. Michael School until
1949. He then furthered his studies at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College
for another 7 years.
After completing school, he continued with his tertiary studies
and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Malaya
in Singapore. He also attended a course at Cambridge University
until 1969, to obtain a certificate in Land Management

In appreciation of his contributions, he was awarded honorary medals
and titles by the State Government of Kedah. Among them were the
Dato' Setia Di Raja Kedah (D.S.D.K.), the Bintang Cemerlang Kedah
(B.C.K.) and the Dato' Paduka Seri Setia Sultan Abdul Halim Mua'adzam
Shah (D.H.M.S.). He was also awarded the title Dato' Jaya Pahlawan
(a titled Dato' of the Orang Besar Enam Belas)
