He was born in Alor Merah, Alor Setar, Kedah on the 27th of August
1937. He early education was at the Malay School, Alor Merah and
proceeded to the Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Setar, Kedah.
He then furthered his education at the University of Sydney in Australia,
where he obtained his degree in Economics.

He was awarded honorary medals and titles for his contributions
to the State. Among them were the Dato' Paduka Seri Setia Sultan
Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah (D.H.M.S.), the Dato' Setia Di Raja Kedah
(D.S.D.K.), the Johan Setia Mahkota (J.S.M), the Bintang Cemerlang
Kedah (B.C.K.) and the Jaksa Pendamai ( J.P.). He was also awarded
the title Dato' Indera Senggara (a titled Dato' of the Orang Besar
Enam Belas)
