Dato' Hj. Hassan Taib was born on 18 May 1949 in Alor Star, Kedah. He received his primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Melayu Derga (Derga Malay Primary School) from 1956 until 1959. A year later, he went to Sekolah Tunku Abdul Halim until 1962. In 1963, he continued his secondary education at Sultan Abdul Hamid College until 1969. After achieving excellent results, he has offered a place to futher his studies at University of Malaya in 1970 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours. In 1979, his love for the pursuit of knowledge took him to a higher level at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.
