Dato' Syed Unan was born on 5 May, 1951 in Alor
Setar, Kedah. He began his early education at Iskandar Primary School,
Alor Setar from 1957 to 1963. He then joined Sultan Abdul Hamid College
until 1971. He was offered a place in the University of Malaya a year
later and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1974.

Dato' Syed Unan also contributed a few working papers and one of
them was entitled "Socio-economic problems arising from the
Implementation of the Muda Irrigation Project" was used for
final a year dissertation for the Sociology and Anthropology Department,
University of Malaya.
His contributions led him to be conferred several honorary medals
and titles. He was awarded the Anugerah Sukan Negeri Kedah in 1989,
the Bintang Cemerlang Kedah (B.C.K.), the Ahli Mahkota Kedah (A.M.K),
the Bintang Setia Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah (B.M.S) and the
Dato' Setia Diraja Kedah (D.S.D.K.)
