The Installation Ceremony

The sound of trumpets signals the entrance of His Highness the Sultan and Her Highness the Sultana into the audience Hall. The Royal Couple are preceded by the Seri Maharaja Lela, escorted on both sides by officials carrying the Religious and the Earth symbols, and are followed by officials carrying the mace and the sword. Behind Their Royal Highnesses are the Aide-de-Camp and the Dang Perwara.

The "selawat" or praise to Allah and His Messenger, Mohammad, is recited the moment the blowing of trumpets ceases. This is be followed by the musical piece, "Raja Berangkat", played by the "nobat" orchestra. The royal couple then ascend the dais to sit on the thrones.

The installation ceremony begins with the Seri Mahrajalela asking for His Highness the Sultan's permission to proceed with the ceremonies. Officials bearing the Installation regalia then enter and place them on a special table in front of the throne. The installation regalia are as follows:

a) A betel caddy.
  b) The Royal Keris.
  c) The Installation's Declaration Letter.
  d) The Scroll containing the Royal Speech.
  e) A small chest (Benian).
  f) A water pitcher.
  g) Embat-embat (small containers used to sprinkle scented water).
  h) A small brazier.

After all the regalia have been placed according to order the following ceremonies take place:

a) The Head of the Islamic Religious Council recites verses from the holy Koran.
  b) The Right Honourable Menteri Besar reads the Installation's declaration.
  c) His Highness the Sultan reads his Royal speech.
  d) The Seri Maharaja presents himself, raises his hands in obeisance, and says the following words:
  "A thousand pardons, Your Highness, please pardon my speech.
"I present to Your Highness the royal Keris which is a symbol of the State's strength, sovereignty and the power of Your Highness.
"Pardon me, Your Highness".
  e) His Highness the sultan accepts the Royal Keris, un-sheaths it, and then returns it to its scabbard.
  f) The audience then stands up and the Maharaja Lela shouts the words "Daulat Tuanku" three times. These words are repeated by the audience the same number of times.
  g) The "nobat" orchestra plays the "Raja Bertabal" or "The Sultan is Enthroned". A 21-gun salute is fired, with the first shot being fired immediately after the first shout of "Daulat Tuanku" and the Royal Umbrellas are be opened.
  h) There now follows the State anthem, "Allah Selamat Sultan", which is sung by a choir.
  i) The Right Honourable Menteri Besar now reads his "Speech of Loyalty and Devotion and words of Congratulations" to His Highness the Sultan.
  j) The Head of the Islamic Religious Council, escorted to his left and right by the Chief Kadi and the Chief Imam of the Zahir Mosque, now reads the prayers.
  k) The Seri Maharaja now once again presents himself to His Highness the Sultan to seek his permission to end the ceremony.
  l) The "nobat" once again plays the "Raja Berangkat", and the Royal couple descend from the throne to leave the hall, escorted by the Royal escorts, according to order, and followed by representatives of Sultans and other Heads of States.
  m) The installation ceremony ends.
