The rules that govern the Royal
Wedding Ceremony have been inherited from rules and
customs passed down from generation to generation.
The glittering ceremonies are carried out at various
phases and levels. The degree of ceremonies to be
carried out must first be given the assent of His
Highness the Sultan. The customs that must be performed
in a Royal wedding are as follows:
The
"Merisik" Ceremony, or discreet enquiry on the availability
of the intended bride
The Engagement
Ceremony
The Assignment
of Tasks Ceremony
The Henna-Picking
Ceremony
The Acceptance
of Gifts Ceremony
The Sitting-in-State
and the Blessing Ceremony
The Ceremonial
Bath
The first part of the ceremony,
the "Merisik" is quickly followed by the Engagement
Ceremony. After the engagement, and after Her Highness
the Sultana has given her assent, the Assignment of
Tasks Ceremony is performed. In this ceremony, the
Engagement Letter and other gifts from the groom are
respectfully presented. The Assignment of Tasks Ceremony
is preceded by the "nobat" and the firing of the ceremonial
nine-gun salute. The Beautification Ceremony ("Berandam"),
which follows the Assignment of Tasks Ceremony, also
sees the use of traditional tools and materials. The
Royal Bride is blessed with "tepung tawar", and scented
with kaffir lime before being bathed.
The Informal Henna ceremony is
performed after the Beautification or the "Berandam"
Ceremony. This ceremony involves the participation
only of lady attendants, and is accompanied by traditional
music. The next stage is the Presentation of the Dowry
and the Bridal Gifts Ceremony, which is followed by
the Marriage Solemnising ("Akad Nikah") Ceremony.
All this takes place at the Audience Hall.
The formal Henna Ceremony takes
place in the evening of the same day as the Dowry
Acceptance Ceremony and the "Akad Nikah" Ceremony.
In this ceremony, His Highness the Sultan and other
senior Royal Family members bless and sprinkle the
"tepung tawar" on the Royal Bridegroom. Her Highness
the Sultana and other Royal Family members bless the
Royal Bride.
The climax of the Royal Wedding
Ceremony is the Sitting-in-State Ceremony, which is
held during the Wedding Dinner. The Royal Bride and
Bridegroom first sit on the "peterana", or cushioned
raised platform, before being taken to sit on the
"Geta Kirana", or throne. Their Highnesses the Sultans
and Sultanas from other states take turns to bless
and sprinkle the "tepung tawar" on the Royal Bride
and Bridegroom.
After a few days, the Lime-Scented
Bathing Ceremony is held on a several-level platform
("Panca Persada"). The Bridal Couple may be escorted
to the "Panca Persada" to the accompaniment of live
"nobat" music. The following Welcoming Ceremony is
the final ceremony in the Royal Wedding Ceremony.
This ceremony, which is held at the Audience Hall,
is attended by both the Sultan and the Sultana and
other State Officials and important guests.
